The blackface in the film “The Jazz Singer” 1927: racial issues and the transition from silent to spoken cinema

This monograph proposes to investigate blackface and its social relations with cinema in American society in the late 1920s, analyzing how it acted in the United States; that was going through a strong social tension since the introduction of segregationist policies developed in the 1870s, such as the Jim Crow laws. The focus of the research will be the film "The Jazz Singer", from 1927, this being an important feature for the world film industry – pioneer in the transition between silent cinema and spoken cinema – but, which brings to the big screens a very common element in the American culture of the period, the minstréis blackfaces. Using this feature and other products as an analysis lens (such as publicity posters), the objective is to understand how the cinematic universe uses this resource; representing or stereotyping the black population; thus highlighting a pejorative view of the African-American community in the country. Starting from the understanding that cinema is part of society and acts significantly in it, contributing to the construction of ideals, values and (pre) concepts of this; the research also intends to be busy investigating and interpreting the way that different American and Brazilian media spaces received this feature. As newspapers, reviews, ads and fan-magazines see the film and the themes that surround it, as well as – also – examining how they approached blackface. Moreover, it will be observed the way these media treated the sound innovation brought by the film, presenting a discussion about how this novelty impacted the Brazilian and American film world, presenting the effects and resistances to its implementation. Finally, this paper aims to expand discussions about how Hollywood cinema's view of African-American populations is.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Esta monografia propõe investigar o blackface e suas relações socias com o cinema na sociedade estadunidense dos anos finais da década de 1920, analisando como este atuou no território dos Estados Unidos; que passava por uma forte tensão social desde a introdução das políticas segregacionistas desenvolvidas na década de 1870, como as leis Jim Crow. O foco da pesquisa será o filme “O Cantor de Jazz”, do ano de 1927, sendo este, um importante longa para a indústria cinematográfica mundial – pioneiro na transição entre o cinema mudo e o cinema falado – mas, que traz para as grandes telas um elemento muito comum na cultura estadunidense do período, os menestréis blackfaces. Utilizando como lente de análise esse longa e seus outros produtos (como cartazes de divulgação), objetiva-se compreender como o universo cinematográfico se utiliza deste recurso; representando ou estereotipando a população negra; ressaltando assim, uma visão pejorativa acerca da comunidade afroamericana no país. Partindo do entendimento que o cinema faz parte da sociedade e atua significativamente nesta, contribuindo para a construção de ideais, valores e (pre) conceitos desta; a pesquisa pretende ainda se ocupar em investigar e interpretar o modo que diferentes espaços midiáticos estadunidenses e brasileiros receberam este longa. Como os jornais, críticas, anúncios e as fan-magazines veem o filme e as temáticas que o envolve, além – também – de examinar como abordaram o blackface. Ademais, será observado o modo que essas mídias trataram a inovação sonora trazida pela película, apresentando uma discussão sobre como essa novidade impactou o mundo cinematográfico brasileiro e estadunidense, abordando os efeitos e resistências a implementação deste. Por fim, pretende-se com este trabalho ampliar as discussões acerca de como é a visão do cinema hollywoodiano sobre as populações afroamericanas
